In our travels for BestWeekends.com, we have stayed in virtually every kind of accommodation; hotels, resorts, inns and B&B's. In the hotel category, we have stayed in everything from a Holiday Inn to Ritz Carltons, to Trump Hotels, to Waldorf Astoria properties to St. Moritz hotels and more. All of the luxury hotels are special places, but one chain stands out in our opinion, for service, exceptional rooms, amenities and dining; Mandarin Oriental Hotels. We have stayed in their hotels in New York, Boston, Washington, DC, San Francisco, Las Vegas and most recently in Miami.

One of the things that make Mandarin special is their ability to find locations that afford a spectacular view. New York has Central Park and the river, Washington DC has the Jefferson Memorial, San Francisco has the Bay, La Vegas has the Strip and Miami has water views from nearly every room. Set on Brickell Key, MO manages both a private island setting and access to downtown Miami, just steps away.

The 295 elegant guestrooms and suites have floor to ceiling windows and are decorated in neutral tones with splashes of color from artwork and furnishings. Beds are dressed in luxury linens and goose down duvets. Marble baths feature a separate tub, a glassed walk-in shower and Shanghai Tang amenities.

The hotel's signature restaurant Azul, is a contemporary waterfront gem offering French-Asian cuisine in a setting with an open kitchen and breathtaking views.  Chef William Crandall's creative menu is complemented by a distinctive wine list and exceptional service.

The hotel's newest restaurant, La Mar by Gaston Acurio, features an amazing Peruvian menu. This was my first venture into Peruvian food and it was a revelation. I started with Anticuchos, traditional peruvian skewers from the anticucho grill, in this case free range chicken, potatoes, choclo, chalaca and ocopa sauce. My entree was Churrasco a lo Pobre; ribeye angus beef, chimichurri, beans and rice tacu-tacu, egg, criolla, chorrillana sauce and fried banana. Paired with a Peruvian Sauvignon Blanc, the meal was rich and flavorful with hints of delicious spices and sweet and savory overtones. Dessert was an unforgettable La Guanabana Esfera; purple corn sorbet, meringue, yogurt, peruvian corn, mote, guanábana cream and chinese cinammon.

Rounding out the dining options MO Bar offers cocktails and casual food in the lobby and the Oasis Pool Cafe serves lunch by the pool.

Soak up the sun at the gorgeous 20,000 square-foot private white sand beach overlooking Biscayne Bay or next to the infinity edge pool and treat yourself to a spa treatment at the tranquil and serene Spa. Mandarin Oriental spas are among the most acclaimed in the world and Miami is no exception having earned Forbes highest 5 star rating.

As expected at a MO hotel, the service is exceptional without being overbearing. The staff is friendly and helpful and quick with somehow remember your name after only one meeting. One example tells it all, I arrived at the hotel before my room was ready and they gave me a locker in the Spa, so that I could change and enjoy the pool while waiting.

If you are looking for a break from northern climes, MO will sooth your soul and revitalize your senses....don't miss it.
