The Charles Hotel, Cambridge

OVERVIEW of The Charles Hotel

For charm, history, and atmosphere, Harvard Square in Cambridge has few rivals – and it is right outside your door at The Charles Hotel. Boasting a unique collection of bookstores, museums, cafes, restaurants and boutiques, the square draws an eclectic blend of

personalities. Its location next to Harvard University and near M.I.T. makes it a popular spot for scholars, artists, students and visitors.

The Charles Hotel, a AAA Four Diamond property, opened in 1985 and has welcomed guests from Barbra Streisand to former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to Supreme Court Justices to Ben Affleck and even to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The hotel has an extensive art collection and many of the original paintings, drawings, photographs and quilts on display throughout the hotel were specially commissioned for the hotel. Established artists such as Doug Hilson, Stephen Sheffield Joel Babb, Pat Steir and Michael Mazur have all created works of art exclusively for The Charles Hotel.

THE ROOMS at The Charles Hotel

A $20 million renovation refreshed the 295 rooms and suites with new board and batten paneled wall finishes, inspired rug designs, Shaker detailed furniture, Italian marble bathrooms with TV mirrors, “smart sleeper” mattresses with Frette linens, an energy saving light system, and enhanced amenities like 55” TV screens and curated superfood minibars.

DINING at The Charles Hotel

Noir is a chic, cozy bar serving classic cocktails and a menu suited for a late afternoon or late night snack. Located in the hotel lobby with a lively outdoor patio during the warmer months, Noir is the perfect spot for an after work cocktail or drinks before dinner

Henrietta’s Table is helmed by Boston native Peter Davis and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and one of Cambridge’ s favorite weekend brunches. Chef Davis uses organic and native ingredients from local producers in and beyond Massachusetts to create an original and simple approach to classic regional cuisine. His Maine Small Farm’s Rotisserie Roasted Herb Crusted Chicken rivals the legendary roast chicken at the now closed Hamersly’s Bistro

Henrietta’s Table has played host to, and provided food for, an annual concert to benefit the Farm School, a family run educational farm in Athol, Massachusetts. The Farm School provides multi-day residential school-year and summer programs for more than 1,500 young people and their teachers, a yearlong apprentice program to train adults in modern sustainable agriculture, and an on-site school.

Last year, Chef Michael Pagliarini, chef/owner of the acclaimed Giulia in Cambridge opened Benedetto in the Charles Hotel. The 220 seat bar and restaurant features a world class design from the legendary Bentel & Bentel architectural team that draws inspiration from the rural sophistication of Umbria. Seasonally, the outdoor patio will serve both beverages and food in Italian café style.

Garnering near perfect scores for food and service, Zagat says of Giulia, “Fabulous” homemade pasta steals the show at this Porter Square Italian, where fans praise the “great care” evident in “exquisite”, “thoughtfully prepared” plates with “precise flavors” and seasonings that work in “symphonic harmony”; “unpretentious, attentive” service enhances the “comfortable, stylish” oak and brick–filled space – that is, “if you can get in”; P.S. the pasta prep space is repurposed as a chef’s table at night.”

Regattabar, in the hotel, is the leading jazz club in all of New England. The Club showcases such musical greats as Bo Diddley, Cassandra Wilson, and Ahmad Jamal and is home to the annual Regattabar Jazz Festival.

THE SPA at The Charles Hotel
